Breeding fish can be somewhat difficult. Especially with Betta fish, as they tend to be aggressive towards other Betta fish. There are several steps you will need to follow in order to successfully breed your Betta fish.
Betta fish breeding is not like breeding any other types of fish. Unlike breeding goldfishes or other common types of aquarium fish, breeding bettas requires a much different process. If you are not careful in breeding, your bettas since they are very territorial and violent in nature would tend to kill other bettas around.
You may be surprised to learn that Betta’s sex drive decreases dramatically after its first year of life! The age of most Betta fish found in the pet stores is six months or more. It is advisable to combine fish with the same experience in mating, if you want to succeed at breeding Betta fish.
As the female fish releases her eggs, the male Betta will use his sperm to fertilize them and then he will begin his fatherly duties right away and care for the young. As soon as the male Betta begins to scoop up the eggs with his mouth and put them into his nest then you should use the opportunity to scoop the female out of the tank and put her back into her own tank because that is her role done!
After a short courtship process they will mate and once the eggs are safely in the male Betta’s bubble nest, take the female out of the tank. The male will take care of the eggs until they hatch and at that point you will need to also remove the male so he does not eat the baby fish.
Do not put your Betta fish with supplementary Betta’s. They are called Siamese fighting fish because they are, in nature, fighting fish. They can slash at one another, often causing the death of at least one fish before they stop. Betta’s can be double with algae eaters, guppies, or corydorus catfish safely.
Use a gentle net to catch your betta’s and transfer him into a baggie full of water from the aquarium so that he is still in his own environment then you can proceed to clean the tank by cleaning up any buildups on the sizes including grime and scum. Then you should replace some of the water.
Add some decoration to the inside of the bowl, preferably small, smooth pebbles and small buildings or figures. The buildings are specially important if you plan to keep a male and a female together. The female will have a place to go hide should the male become aggressive towards her.
There are several things that you will need to make sure you have ready and set up before you can even begin the breeding process. These include things such as keeping the water temperature a comfortable 80 degrees, and making sure that you remove the female and male Bettas at the right time.
Bottle water maybe one of the most harmful environment for your tropical Betta fish. Bottle water may contain some harmful chemicals to your tropical Betta fish. Bottle water also does not contain the essential minerals Betta fish need to survive.
